I was at the Public Library the other day and noticed there was no Christmas Tree or any other holiday decorations. When I inquired as to why, the response was a sheepish, it is against library policy. FFS, another unelected board makes a decision to keep a minority of people happy. I don’t know, maybe the city council did it, I was too pissed to investigate.
Instead of bowing to the powers at be, the library board, or its hired leadership could have proposed a learning opportunity. The library should have put up a Christmas tree, a Menorah and other displays that inform visitors how other religions (e.g., Diwali – the Hindu festival) and cultures view the Holiday season (or simply ignore it – as some do) and what festivals have similar importance. Inform and educate. It does not have to be solely religious and can include the festive nature of celebration without delving into the ideology. It could attempt to explain why Kwanzaa is celebrated but I would focus attention on those celebrations that have been around longer than me.
Instead, it bans Christmas trees.
It is indicative of our current society. Instead of embracing differences, the goal appears to be to eliminate anything offensive. If a Christmas tree or a Menorah offends someone, they are banned. The occasional agnostic, Hindu, Buddhist, or atheist might be offended. It is beyond absurd. Homeowners Associations (HOA’s) banning nativity scenes due to covenant violations is an annual event.
As a side note, HOA’s are a significant factor in the cultivation of Karens.
This solution is not only true of Christmas decorations, but in other policy moves. Instead of changing policy to address the problem, we add more policy direction to isolate and inflate the problem. I may get into this in more detail at a later date, but one of our state Legislators is going to run legislation that will pay STEM teachers more than other teachers. The rationale for this policy move is due to our abysmal fourth and eighth grade math scores. Increasing teacher salaries may be a good plan, but it will not help fourth graders improve math scores. To create different pay scales for teacher expertise is a pandora’s box and until we find an accurate and objective way to equate teacher excellence with student output, it is fraught with problems. But, I digress.
Back to decorations, I am surprised no teachers were guillotined for daring to display a tree or candy cane. Maybe a few tried snowman, they could insist those are just winter decorations.
Or are they?!?!?!

Moral: There is no moral to this story. It’s just a view of the world in which we live today, and it is only getting worse.
Since this little gem came out many years ago, our current state of affairs proves it is getting worse.
